Established in 2008, Harbourside Engineering Consultants (HEC) is a young and energetic firm with a fresh approach to work. The principals, Robbie Fraser, M.Sc., P.Eng. and Greg MacDonald, P.Eng., have a long track record of undertaking the most challenging assignments and developing innovative and cost effective designs in a timely manner. As a result, the firm has worked on over 400 projects, worth a capital value of over $500 million and has become one of the largest independently owned structural engineering firms in Atlantic Canada.
HEC started with one drafting specialist and two professional engineers (the two company principals). The response to HEC’s success in designing and executing heavy civil projects has resulted in an influx of work, both locally and nationally, and has resulted in the rapid, yet sustainable growth of the firm. With a current staff of 15 engineers, 8 drafting specialists and 3 support staff, HEC have literally increased in size 800% since our start in 2008. The firm currently specializes in the design and construction implementation of heavy civil infrastructure projects, with an emphasis on bridges, marine structures and construction engineering though we are not limited to these areas. The HEC team is always on the lookout for unique and challenging structural or construction engineering projects.
HEC has worked on many of the most challenging projects in the Atlantic region and beyond with significant projects completed (or underway) in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Ontario.
HEC has already completed, or is already currently involved in the design and management of several important infrastructure projects including: The Cheticamp River Bridge Replacement for Public Works Government Services Canada (PWGSC) – designated a signature project for PWGSC and a recent recipient of the 2011 CISC Steel Design Award for Engineering Excellence in the Atlantic Region, Phase II of the Highway 104 Twinning Project through the Town of Antigonish for Nova Scotia Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (NSTIR), the Larry Uteck Interchange Structure for NSTIR/HRM, the design and construction of the Little Bras d’Or Bridge in Cape Breton, NS for NSTIR, the replacement of major arch structures in Sydney River and East River, NS for NSTIR, the Highfield Park Pedestrian Bridge for HRM, the re-decking design for the Macdonald Bridge Suspension Span for Halifax Harbour Bridges/Buckland & Taylor, and the Strandherd Armstrong Bridge Erection in Ottawa, Ontario for Horseshoe Hill Construction.
